Painted-On Smiles

A Reward

During a message in Church, I was struck by something the pastor said concerning 'talents'. He said that while many people consider this just a passage concerning contributing your money and investing it in God's work, this really concerns all the things God entrusts us with here on earth. It concerns how you invest your time, your money, and your abilities.

Well, though the word 'talent' in this passage concerns a chunk of money, I took it personally between the eyes as a rebuke that I had NOT been using my talents in songwriting and music in general to further God's kingdom here on earth, and His work in the hearts of believers as well.

I didn't hear much more that day of the message (sorry, Bro. Bobby!) because I was too busy writing the words to this song. And this song has been a major catalyst in bringing me to the point of actually publishing these songs to try and minister to YOU, bringing you into a better relationship of service with our Lord and Master, King Jesus.

After all, He gave Everything for you. Give what you can back, as a labor of Love, not out of guilt.

Comments on the lyrics below:
Before anyone reminds me that the wicked servant mentioned in Matthew 25 was thrown into outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth, and that he was obviously NOT a believer, let me point you to 1 Corinthians 3:12-15, where it clearly states that those who do no work will be saved, yet as 'by fire'.

Anyone who has had a house fire (we have) understands that verse. The fire may take everything you own, but as long as everyone lives through it, all you can feel is grateful to have survived.

Lyrics

Verse 1:
I dreamt last night that Jesus
Had called His children home
I was carried there on angels' wings
To stand before His throne
Millions stood there with me
Many friends I'd known before
And as each one came before Him
He gave them their reward.

Chorus:
A reward for their service unto Him
Much more than they could ever comprehend
Pressed down and spilling over
As much as He could bless
And each received a mansion
And a crown of Righteousness.

Verse 2:
When it came to my turn
The Lord turned me away.
He said He gave me talents
And I buried them away.
And He'd wanted so to bless me
If I'd only served the Lord
So I choked back tears and turned from Him
With nothing for reward.

Chorus:
A reward for their service unto Him
Much more than they could ever comprehend
Pressed down and spilling over
He had wanted so to bless
And to give to me a mansion
And a crown of Righteousness.

Verse 3:
I walked past jeweled palaces
Upon a golden street
No coat upon my back and no shoes upon my feet.
Many gave me food to eat
And a place inside their homes
But I couldn't help but wish I had
A place to call my own.

Chorus:
A reward for their service unto Him
Much more than they could ever comprehend
Pressed down and spilling over
He had wanted so to bless
And to give to me a mansion
And a crown of Righteousness.

Verse 4:
I woke up almost almost instantly
With one thought on my mind
I had to tell you of my dream
While we still have time
For I know He wants to bless us
For our service to the Lord
And you and I must glorify
His name with our reward.

Chorus:
A reward for our service unto Him
Much more than we could ever comprehend
Pressed down and spilling over
As much as He can bless
With a gold and marble mansion
And a crown of righteousness.
